K-12 Physical Education Curriculum

The K-12 physical education curriculum based on the SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) standards aims to develop physically literate individuals who value and engage in physical activity throughout their lives. The curriculum aims to instill a love for physical activity, promote health literacy, and empower students to make informed decisions about their physical and mental well-being, preparing them for healthy and active lifestyles beyond school.

Elementary Physical Education

At this stage, the focus is on fundamental movement skills, promoting physical fitness, and introducing physical activities and sports. Students learn basic skills in locomotor movements, object manipulation, and social skills through cooperative games. The curriculum emphasizes enjoyment in movement, developing self-confidence, and understanding the importance of physical activity for overall lifelong health.

Middle School Physical Education (Grades 6-8)

The middle school curriculum expands on foundational motor skills and physical literacy to include more complex skills and fitness concepts through individual and team activities designed to increase heart rate. There is an increased focus on personal fitness, allowing students to set goals and track their progress. An additional emphasis is placed on teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, and respect for others in the physical fitness setting.

High School Physical Education (Grades 9-12)

At this level, the curriculum encourages students to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. Students explore lifelong fitness concepts, including stress management and personal wellness. High school students may select from a number of physical education courses that emphasize team or individual sports, strength and conditioning, or personal fitness. Students may also elect to earn a credential through courses like Lifeguarding or Sports Officiating (the latter provides an elective credit rather than a PE credit). Students with full schedules may alternatively select a Virtual PE course or may apply for a waiver.
