Health I (Same as Health 9) This comprehensive course introduces students to a wide range of health subject areas. The areas of study include fitness and nutrition, diseases and disorders, adolescent growth and development, consumer and environmental concerns, and substance use and abuse. Within these areas, students will further explore stress management, teen suicide and human sexuality issues. The student will: Health II This course is designed to introduce students to the concept of Public Health (the laws and regulations that promote and protect the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work, and play). Students will gain a better understanding of the role Public Health plays in their everyday lives by reviewing previous and current public health issues and strategies. Students will also explore an issue in Public Health that is most interesting to them and develop their own strategies to combat the problem. The student will: PE – Intro to Strength Training The goal of this course is to provide students an opportunity to learn proper strength training techniques and understand the appropriate progression of a fitness program. Students will work in the areas of muscular strength, endurance, and mobility. Students will: Peer Assistance Learning (PAL) PAL PE is a physical education course designed for students who may benefit from a combination of differentiated instruction and peer assistance in the Physical Education setting. This course provides a fun and inclusive atmosphere in which all students will learn about and experience health, fitness, and recreational activities as well as social and interpersonal development. PAL PE also supports the development of leadership skills for all students, and empowers all students to foster an inclusive environment school-wide. Students involved in the Best Buddies program will receive first priority in the scheduling process. Students will: PE – Advanced Strength Training Students will: PE – Team Sports The goal of this course is to establish an understanding of a variety of team sports while promoting a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. This course exposes students to different pathways to participate in physical activity. Skills, techniques, and fundamentals of each sport will be emphasized. All outdoor activities are weather-permitting. Possible course activities include volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, frisbee games, team handball, and floor hockey. Students will: PE – Individual Sports The goal of this course is to establish an understanding of a variety of individual sports while promoting a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. This course exposes students to different pathways to participate in physical activity. Skills, techniques, and fundamentals of each sport will be emphasized. All outdoor activities are weather-permitting. Possible course activities include: golf, tennis, archery, disc golf, badminton, pickleball, table tennis, and yard games. Students will: PE – Warrior/Wolf Fit The goal of this course is to offer students a fitness program involving a variety of aerobic activities to enhance their cardiovascular fitness. Students will gain the skills and knowledge needed to maintain fitness levels post-high school. Activities can include HIIT workouts, circuit training workouts, aerobics, kick-boxing, and yoga. Students will: PE – Lifeguarding Prerequisites: 1.) At least 15 years old by the end of the course. 2.) Must swim 300 yards, using the following strokes in order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing, propellant kick, 100 yards of breaststroke, 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke. 3.) Must tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs. 4). Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands holding the brick. Must be completed in 1:40 or less. The goal of the course is to help the participants become familiar with potential hazards of water activities, to prevent accidents, and to respond effectively if an emergency does occur. Basic water safety, advanced swimming strokes, water rescue, and first aid and CPR will be covered in this course. Students must provide their own transportation to the Waukee Family YMCA pool. *Students will be charged a $40 fee for Red Cross certification cards. PE – Virtual There are no prerequisites, however, students may be placed in this course in order to meet graduation requirements, acceleration needs, and/or remediation needs. Students who sign up for this course must have a full academic schedule or plan to graduate early. This is an online physical education class focusing on the individual needs of the student to prepare for lifelong wellness. This course will consist of three strands: 1) Physical Component; 2) Social/Experiential Component; 3) Academic Component. With teacher guidance, students will work to develop a personalized wellness program that fits their individual strengths, interests, and goals.Physical Education Department Courses
